FLETCHER’s music is “anthemic, empowering, self-aware and honest,” a true reflection of who she is and her experiences. One of the reasons her music is so authentic is because she draws from her own emotions. “It’s hard for me to write about something that I’ve never experienced. So I really draw my inspiration from all of my experiences.” Being so vulnerable to such a large audience can be difficult for many, and at first it was very hard for FLETCHER. “I used to be very uncomfortable with vulnerability and it always gave me a lot of anxiety. The idea of anyone ever seeing me going through a hard time was really something that I couldn’t fathom and it made me very uncomfortable. But the more that I’ve been writing over the last couple of years, the more it’s taught me to be okay with talking about my feelings. I find that as songwriters we suddenly have to be very open. I actually walked into a session a couple days ago, and the person was like, ‘Tell me your life story, what is hard right now,’ and I had to dish everything out in like 10 minutes. Which is so strange. But it has been really therapeutic and taught me to be much more open. So many incredible things have come from it.” Her willingness to be vulnerable to the entire world, even when it is uncomfortable, is what draws so many to her music.
If you were stuck on a desert island and could only bring three albums with you, which ones would they be?
Pure Heroine by Lorde, I’m obsessed with that album. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles would have to be the second one. And Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
Do you have a favorite TV show?
My favorite TV show at the moment is Riverdale! It’s such a good modern drama. I also went to college with Cami Mendes so it’s great to see her succeeding. I am also loving The Bold Type right now!
Do you have a favorite venue or festival you have performed at?
I actually just started playing festivals this summer. I really loved playing Hangout Fest because it was just so incredibly organized and it was so nice. There were actual pools like on the beach. It was such a fun crowd too!
