YouTuber Hannah Meloche is not your typical teenager. In her free time, she creates content for her over 1.7 million subscribers, designs a merch line, and can often be found traveling—all while attending public school. Subscribers are drawn in by her authenticity and relatable personality that shine through in her frequent vlogs. Her content inspires subscribers to be themselves and stay positive, with her goal being to remind viewers to love and accept themselves and chase after their dreams. Meloche talks to us about how her YouTube channel has impacted her life, her interest in directing, and her merch line in our Spring 2019 issue.
Prior to becoming a content creator, what was the career path or plans you thought/expected you were going to follow? Have these plans changed? If so, how?
I’ve always wanted to be a director, whether it’s a movie, TV show, music video, or just a fun personal project. I love the film industry; there’s always a story to tell. I want to work more with directors and producers more seriously down the road, but right now I get to create my own work and I have an amazing audience supporting me.
How have your favorite directors, such as Hannah Lux Davis, influenced how you create your content? What do you hope to learn from them?
Hannah Lux Davis is always thinking of the next step and is so talented and hard working. I would absolutely love to shadow or work with directors on set and see what goes into a big project.
With your interest in filmmaking and directing, what would be a dream project of yours to direct?
I would love to work with an artist on creating a music video, collaborating, working super hard to create a certain vision that tells a story in a few minutes, and sharing it with the world. It would be so rewarding and fulfilling. Also, being apart of any film project for that matter, I find everything about it intriguing.
Many YouTubers your age are homeschooled or live in LA to pursue YouTube full time. Living in Michigan and attending public school, how do you balance traveling, creating content, and schoolwork?
I love going to public school, and yes it’s hard sometimes when kids don’t look at you as a normal kid, but it’s important for me to stay in school. I’ve always dreamed of having a perfect “movie-like” high school experience, and although it wasn’t always happy, fun, or easy, both with the social aspect and school work, it’s shaped me into the person I am now. I’m happy I stuck through the hard times and get to graduate with my class.
I keep myself close to my family and friends. I workout, meditate, go to church, read lots of positive quotes, laugh at myself, learn from my mistakes, and find how each difficult situation has made me stronger.
What inspired you to design your merch line?
I wanted something positive that my viewers could wear on the daily and be reminded that they’re doing fine and we’re all figuring out life together.
A lot of your merch holds positive messages, whether it’s self-love or growth. How do you remain positive in your life?
I keep myself close to my family and friends. I workout, meditate, go to church, read lots of positive quotes, laugh at myself, learn from my mistakes, and find how each difficult situation has made me stronger. I look to my sister or mom if I ever need advice on something that’s weighing me down.
If you could write a letter to your younger self, what would you say?
My mom has always told me not to compare myself to others. You can look up to others and admire them, but we all have our own stories. That helped me a lot growing up and it still does. I would tell myself to stay strong and true to yourself but also be vulnerable, respect others, and be humble. Also, I would tell myself you’re doing fine and everything is going to be more than okay.
If you could change one thing about YouTube or social media, what would it be?
I definitely don’t like the drama or when people assume things or make up rumors. It’s hard when you’re dealing with something personally, but it’s way worse when people are commenting about things you’re trying to figure out yourself. It does come with sharing your life with the Internet though, so it’s something I’m learning to deal with.
Outside of YouTube and social media, what do you enjoy doing? What are some of your favorite hobbies or passions?
Well since I vlog basically my whole life, I record what I love to do, but I want to become better at surfing for sure. I love to sing. I love reading cheesy romantic books, but I want to get into reading more intellectual books. I want to learn how to box, ride a skateboard, roller skate, and become a better writer. There’s plenty of things I want to try and am interested in learning about, and the list could go on forever, but here’s a few for now.
Any upcoming projects you can share with your fans?
I do have a big announcement coming up this summer that I’m super excited to share, and I think all my viewers will be very excited as well!
