You might recognize him as a member of the music group Forever in Your Mind or perhaps as Lucas, the self-obsessed brother, from Netflix’s Alexa & Katie. Fresh off the release of season two of Alexa & Katie, singer and actor Emery Kelly chats with us about his upcoming projects and future career plans!
You started your music career on The X-Factor. What was it like being on the show and facing a panel of judges including Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato?
It was honestly crazy! Auditioning for icons like them was an amazing experience for me, and being on that show taught me so much of what I know now in public and behind the scenes in the entertainment industry.
You’re part of the band Forever in Your Mind with Ricky Garcia and Liam Attridge. How would you describe the sound of FIYM?
Personally, I feel the sound of FIYM is like an evolution. The sound evolves with us as we grow older and live through different experiences. But recently we’ve been in an R&B, EDM type vibe.
Talk us through your songwriting process and how the three of you collaborate. What do you each bring to the table?
I feel like we each bring a lot of elements to the table. Most of the time it’s different depending on how we’re doing and feeling throughout that day and before the session. A quick rundown of a songwriters process: chord structure (from any instrument or software), melody, lyrics, record. 😉
What are your thoughts on the stereotype of boy bands? Do you and your band members like being referred to as a boyband?
People can call us whatever we want. I honestly don’t care and I feel like the boys don’t care either. Call us a man band if you’d like, haha.
What was the inspiration behind your recent EP Euphoric? How did that title come about?
A lot of fun, R&B, pop feel with EDM licks. I came up with the idea of the title of the EP right before we performed “Rabbit Hole” on the Megyn Kelly TODAY show.
You’re taking on singing and acting simultaneously. How do you juggle the two? Are there any aspects of singing that you can apply to acting or vice versa?
Juggling the two is like lacrosse and it’s ball. Sometimes it works and I use both at the same time, and sometimes it doesn’t depending on what the song is and what the project is. But if you watch Alexa & Katie Season 2 you’ll see FIYM do something fun on there 😉
You mention the Netflix series Alexa & Katie, in which you star in, can you tell us a little about the show and your role (and what it’s like playing a character obsessed with his hair)?
Alexa & Katie is about two best friends who’re starting high school as freshmen, and Alexa is going through cancer treatment. Right before school starts she starts to lose her hair, and throughout the season she goes through numerous obstacles, but she doesn’t let her cancer stop her from defeating those obstacles. My role is Alexa’s brother, Lucas Mendoza. He looks out for his sister, but he has some dumb tendencies that are shown in a comical light. His hair is his best friend. When I’m in Lucas mode, I treat my head like the first crown ever made lol. I’m not actually like that in real life though, hahaha!
Do you have any memorable behind the scenes moments from filming Alexa & Katie?
I have them all on my phone and laugh and cry all the time when I look through the videos and pictures. It’s a big album.
You’ve previously talked about how you were made fun of when you were younger because you were interested in music and acting. How do you feel about those moments now?
I cherish those moments every second. I wouldn’t have the confidence in myself or the passion for music and acting if it wasn’t for those negative times. So in a weird way, I thank those people.
Many passionate musicians/actors believe that singing/acting is what they are meant to do. Do you feel that way? Do you think you would ever change careers?
I feel like acting and music right now is what I’m meant to do. But who knows what I’m gonna do in the future. Maybe go to film school and learn how to produce movies and direct.
Besides acting and singing, how do you like to spend your free time?
I spend my free time playing basketball, longboarding, traveling, surfing, meditating, writing, and reading.
If you could duet or co-star with one other person, who would it be? Why?
If I could collab with someone, I’d want it to be Frank Ocean. That’s my dream collab.
You’re only 20 years old and so much has happened since you entered the entertainment industry. Taking a step back, what moment are you most proud of, personally or career-wise)?
I can’t decide. Every moment is so dear to me. I love everything I do equally and I’m happy about it.
Any final thoughts you want to share with our readers?
I hope you enjoyed the reading everyone. Be yourself. Learn to love the process. Always move forward.
