Mason Guccione, a 22-year-old actor from Tomball, Texas, reflects on his first performances, his child-like energy, and his dreams in our Summer 2018 issue. Guccione was most recently seen playing “Toby Fletcher” in 13 Reasons Why and “Young Alex” in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Who was your biggest role model growing up? Who is your role model today?
My parents have and always will be my biggest role models. I know that sounds cheesy, but they are such great people.
You can currently be seen in the second season of 13 Reasons Why as “Toby Fletcher.” How did this role come about?
I was actually auditioning for a movie, when last minute my agents said, “Hey, wanna audition for [13 Reasons Why]?” I was like, “Sure!”
13 Reasons Why is more than just a TV show. The show spreads awareness about cyberbullying, teen suicides, and general mental health issues, while also touching on the life of a student in high school. Why do you think it is important to be part of a TV social outreach like this?
I’m only 22, so I’ve still been pretty fresh out of high school, I have a lot of friends and family who are in high school, and who are starting. Everything this show portrays still exist in schools. You would be surprised what goes on in schools. I have had depression and was a part of bullying my whole middle and high school life, so this show means a lot to me. It’s important to display these topics and bring it to conversation, so hopefully we can help as much as possible.
I want to let people know that they matter.
What is the cast dynamic like on set of 13 Reasons Why?
I want to let people know that they matter. I want people to know it’s OK to talk. That there is always someone out there that will have your back. The cast dynamic is amazing. Everyone is like family on this set. Everyone believes so much in this show and it’s message, it’s easy to work together in that aspect.
Do you have any behind the scenes memories that you can share?
When I was up there, we would always go to dinner together, or play board games at Ross Butlers (Zach) apartment! Devin Druid (Tyler) would also let me stay with him sometimes and we would pull all nighters playing video games.
Do you have a favorite episode from season two?
Episode 11 definitely. Spoiler alert!!!!!!!!!!!! Mainly because of the fight scene. The amount of work and choreography everyone put in the scene was crazy. Everyone had their own thing going on in the fight. I love pausing it on the wide shots to see what everyone is doing.
What did you struggle with the most?
Accents are my struggle point at the moment, but that’s changing. I’m working on it everyday!
Besides acting, do you have any other passions?
I love gaming. It’s been my stress reliever since I could play.
You have done so much so far in your career. What are you most proud of?
I’m proud of never giving up. Staying strong and never stopping.
